This is where Bak Jae-hyeok (1895-1921), an independence activist, threw a bomb to Japan’s police station on September 14, 1920 during the Japanese colonial period (1910-1945). The building to the right of the stairway is the former location of the police station.

Uiyeoldan hired radical approaches such as assassinating Japanese high-ranking officials and bombing colonial offices and companies. Busan’s Japanese police office was one of their major targets, as it was a symbol of local colonial rule and suppression.

계단 오른쪽 건물은 일제강점기 부산경찰서가 있었던 곳이다.

1897년 이 자리에 청사를 이전하였는데 화재로 소실되자 1905년에 2층 서구식 목조건물로 새로 지었고 1924년 6월 현재 중부경찰서 자리로 이전하기 전까지 여기 있었다.

일제강점기 당시 식민통치의 상징이자 독립운동가를 탄압했던 부산경찰서는 의열단 ‘5파괴’대상의 하나였다.

부산 범일동에서 3대 독자로 태어난 박재혁(1895~1921) 의사는 1920년 9월 14일 부산경찰서에 들어가 폭탄을 던졌다. 경찰서 일부가 폭파되고 하시모토 서장을 중상을 입었다. 의열단이 최초로 성공한 의거였다. 당시 일본 신문은 “동경의 한복판에 투탄한 것과 같다”라고 하였다. 박재혁은 1921년 3월 31일 경성고등법원에서 사형이 최종 확정되었고 대구형무소 복역 중 사형이 집행되기 전 1921년 5월 11일에 단식으로 옥중 순국하였다. 그때 그의 나이 27세였다.

정부는 1962년 건축훈장 독립장을 추서하였다.

부산 범일동에서 태어난 박재혁은 1919년에 설립된 무장독립운동단체인 의열단의 단원이었다. 의열단은 일제 고위관리를 암살하거나 식민 기관 및 기업에 폭탄을 투척하는 등 급진적인 무력활동을 전기하였다. 일제 식민통치와 탄압의 상징이었던 부산경찰서 역시 의열단의 주요 파괴 대상 중 하나였다.

박재혁은 중국인 고서상으로 위장하여 부산경찰서에 들어가, 서장인 하시모토 앞에서 폭탄을 던졌다. 서장이 사망하고 경찰서 일부가 폭파되었다. 이는 의열단이 최초로 성공한 의거였다. 현장에서 체포된 박제혁은 1921년 3월 사형 선고를 받았으며, 5월 대구형무소에서 단식으로 순국하였다. 1962년 대한민국 정부는 건국훈장 독립장을 추서하였다.
