Iljumun is the first gate on the path to Bongamsa Temple. Most Korean Buddhist temples have this kind of gate to mark the entrance to the temple. The name originates from the fact that the main pillars of the gate are aligned in a single row. This symbolizes the single-minded devotion of believers, ideally emptying their minds that had been tainted by secular business, before entering the temple premises. The gates feature a wooden plaque bearing the name of the temple.

It is unknown exactly when the gate was first constructed, but it is presumed to be built in 18th century. It is the second oldest building in the temple, after Geungnakjeon hall, which is presumed to have been built in the middle of the Joseon period (1392-1910).
