The detailed history of this temple is unknown. According to a legend, it was established by a monk named Manil who made a buddha statue and a stone pagoda in the temple's premises in the first half of the 10th century. There is another legend about the name of this temple, meaning "Temple of the Late Evening." It says that a pair of white cranes was carving a buddha on a nearby rock face, but as the sun began to set, they could not complete the carving and flew westward. The rock-carved buddha (Chungcheongnam-do Cultural Heritage Material No. 255) currently remaining in this temple is believed to be the uncompleted carving from this story.

The temple is presumed to have been closed in the late period of the Joseon dynasty (1392-1910), as a directory of Joseon's Buddhist temples published in 1799 recorded it as not in use. The temple was reestablished in 1876 with the construction of its main worship hall. This hall was dismantled and replaced with the current building in 1970.
