해설문

국문

만일사 마애불은 영산전과 관음전 사이 동쪽 암벽에 새겨져 있는 불상이다. 높이와 너비는 각각 6m 정도로 비교적 대형에 속한다. 미완성 작품으로 추정되는데, 상당 부분 닳았지만 전체적인 윤곽은 확인된다.

불상의 양쪽 귀는 길게 표현되어 있는데, 얼굴 윤곽은 알아보기 어렵다. 몸은 양쪽 어깨를 수평에 가깝게 조각했는데, 전체적으로 당당하고 안정된 느낌이다. 두 손을 가슴 부근에 모으고 있는데 어떤 수인(手印)*인지는 알 수 없다. 몸에 걸친 법의(法衣)도 윤곽 정도만 확인되고, 대좌는 연꽃이 장식된 연화대좌로 보인다. 마애불 앞부분과 머리 위쪽의 양쪽에 홈이 있는데 보호각을 설치했던 흔적으로 추정된다.

만일사 창건과 관련해서 학이 불상을 조각하다 날이 저물어 불상을 완성하지 못했다는 전설이 전하는데, 만일사 마애불이 그 미완성 불상이라고 한다. 사찰에 남아있는 오층석탑, 석불좌상 등과 함께 고려 시대에 만들어진 것으로 추정된다.

영문 해설 내용

관음전과 영산전 사이에 위치한 이 마애불은 고려시대에 만들어진 것으로 추정된다.

높이와 너비가 각각 6m 정도인 대형 마애불이며, 미완성 작품인 것으로 여겨진다. 전설에 따르면, 한 쌍의 백학이 이 바위에 불상을 조각하였는데, 저녁이 되어 해가 지자, 완성하지 못하고 서쪽으로 날아가버렸다고 한다. 이후 이 불상은 미완성인 채로 남겨졌고, 사찰은 '늦은 저녁'이라는 뜻의 만일사라고 불리게 되었다.

전체적으로 마모가 심해 자세한 형태를 알아보기는 어렵다. 불상은 연화대좌 위에 앉아 있으며, 두 손을 가슴 앞에 모으고 있다. 머리 양쪽에 구멍이 남아 있는 것으로 보아, 한때 마애불의 머리 위에 보호각을 설치했던 것으로 보인다.
