Cheonwangmun Gate is used as the north main gate of Magoksa Temple. The gate is presumed to have been built in the late 17th century and it is recorded to have been repaired in 1910.

해설문

국문

천왕문(天王門)은 마곡사 남원의 해탈문 북쪽에 위치하며, 해탈문과 함께 남원과 북원을 연결하는 진입 통로로 이용된다. 건립 시기는 조선 후기 중건 당시로 추정된다. 건물 안쪽에 위치한 사천왕(四天王)은 천상계(天上界)의 가장 낮은 곳인 사천왕천(四天王天)의 동서남북을 지키는 불법(佛法)을 수호하는 수호신이다. 부처님이 계신다는 수미산(須彌山)의 중턱에서 사방을 지키면서 인간들이 불도(佛道)를 따라 살고 있는지 살피면서 올바르게 인도하는 역할을 수행하는 역할을 한다. 일반적으로 해탈문이 천왕문보다 뒤쪽에 위치하는데, 마곡사는 해탈문과 천왕문의 순서가 뒤바뀌어 배치된 점이 특이하다.

영문 해설 내용

천왕문은 마곡사 북쪽 영역으로 진입하는 정문으로 이용된다. 처음 세워진 시기는 17세기 후반으로 추정되며, 1910년에 고쳐 지은 기록이 남아 있다.

건물 안쪽에는 4개의 소조 사천왕상이 있다. 사천왕은 원래 고대 인도의 신이었으나, 불교에 귀의한 후 수미산 중턱에서 동서남북의 네 방향을 지키며 부처님과 부처님의 가르침을 수호하게 되었다. 인간들이 부처님의 가르침을 따라 살고 있는지 살피면서 올바르게 인도하는 역할도 한다.
