Dokdo has immense academic value in the field of natural science, not to mention its significant historic value as the territory of Korea from the time of King Jijeung (r. 500-514) of Silla, and was therefore designated as a natural monument. Dokdo is comprised of two main islands, Dongdo (East Island) and Seodo (West Island), as well as 89 other small islets in the vicinity.

Dokdo is located along the flight path of migratory birds, and is the only location in the East Sea where large groups of Swinhoe’s storm petrel, streaked shearwater, and black-tailed gull are found to breed. It was designated and thereafter preserved as Dokdo Breeding Ground of Seabirds in 1982. It was later renamed Dokdo Island Natural Reserve in 1999, in further recognition of its unique plants and sea creatures as well as its geological value as a volcanic island.

Key Places of Dokdo

East Island (Dongdo)

The East Island (called Dongdo in Korean) is one of Dokdo's two major islands. As the peak has a relatively flatter surface, Dokdo's key facilities, such as a guard post, helicopter landing, and lighthouse, are located here. In the center of the island is a steep crater, which connects at sea level to an arch-shaped opening, into which water flows to create a cave-like inlet.

The East Island has an altitude of 98.6 m, an area of 73,293 ㎡, and a circumference of 2.8 km.

The West Island is located 151 m away, and the water in between the two islands averages 10 m in depth.

Key places: Ceiling Cave Inlet (Cheonjanggul), Face Rock (Eolgulbawi), Whetstone Rock (Sutdolbawi), Fan Rock (Buchaebawi), Independence Gate Rock (Dongnimmunbawi)

West Island (Seodo)

The West Island (called Seodo in Korean) is slightly bigger than the East Island. Its single, steep peak is difficult to access. The ancient landscape, largely untouched by humans, together with the black-tailed gulls that inhabit the island, create an awe-inspiring scene. On the northern side of the island is a gully down which surface water flows and is then collected, which provides around 1,000 liters of precious drinking water every day.

The West Island has an altitude of 168.5 m, an area of 88,740 ㎡, and a circumference of 2.6 km.

Key sites: Inhabitants’ Residence, Elephant Rock (Kokkiribawi), Nobleman's Cap Peak (Tanggeonbong), Water Gully (Mulgol)

Islets in the Vicinity

In addition to the East Island and West Island, there are 89 other rocks and reefs in the vicinity, which show off their fine forms surrounded by the blue waves of the East Sea.

Key places: Sea Lion Rock (Gajebawi), Barnacle Rock (Bochalbawi), Three Brothers Cave Rock (Samhyeongjegulbawi), Candlestick Rock (Chotdaebawi), Chicken Rock (Dakbawi), etc.
