‘도산 서당’은 진사 오도상이 17세기 후반에 자신의 자제와 인근 아이들을 교육시키던 곳이다. 이후 오도상의 사위로 예조 참판을 지낸 정택신이 물려받아 관리하였다.

고창 도산 마을에 자리하고 있어서 도산 서원이라고 하지만 원래는 ‘섬뜸 서당’이다. 1862년에 만수 김영철*이 매입하여, 1907년에 본래의 건물을 헐고 그 자리에 강당을 짓고 자기 호를 따서 ‘만수당’이라고 하였다.

도산 서당은 도산 초등학교가 개교(1934)할 당시에 학교 교실로 사용되는 등 서당 교육과 근대 교육을 연결해 주는 징검다리 역할을 하였다. 또한 서당에는 당대 명사들의 시문과 송사 기우만이 쓴 ‘만수당기’ 등의 시판과 기판이 걸려 있다. 강당인 만수당과 회천 정사, 정자와 연못으로 이루어진 후원 등에서 당시의 격조 높은 서당의 모습을 엿볼 수 있다.


  • 김영철: 기우만이 1895년 명성황후 살해 당시에 장성에서 의병을 일으키고 격문을 각 군에 발송할 때에 고창의 책임자였으며, 동학 농민 혁명 직후에 동학군을 토벌하는 고창현 수성청의 참모로 활동하였다.
