해설문

국문

'덕천사’는 신말주, 조윤옥, 장조평의 위패*가 안치되어 있는 사우*이다. 이 사우는 순조 때인 1818년에 세웠는에, 고종 때인 1868년에 헐렸다가, 1917년 이후에 다시 건립하였고, 이후 7명의 위패를 추가로 안치하였다. 북쪽 높은 터에 덕천사가 있으며 남쪽에는 강당인 숭절당이 있다. 덕천사는 사우와 강당만을 갖춘 조선 후기의 전형적인 소규모 양식의 사우이다.

'덕천사'에 배향한 신말주, 조윤옥, 장조평 등은 단종 폐위를 계기로 전라도 순창으로 낙향한 분들이다. 신말주는 신숙주의 동생으로 단종이 폐위 당하자 벼슬에서 물러나 처가인 전라도 순창에서 지냈다. 조윤옥은 옥천 조씨로 단종 폐위 당시 사간원 사간으로 재직하였으며, 고창으로 입향한 조덕린의 증조부이기도 하다. 장조평은 흥덕 장씨로 단종 폐위 당시 동몽교관*을 지냈다. 현재 덕천사에서는 옥천 조씨 중추공파 종중에서 음력 9월 8일에 향사하고 있다.

덕천사는 조선시대의 문신인 신말주(1429-1503), 조윤옥(1430-?), 장조평(1429-1501)의 위패를 모시기 위해 1818년에 세운 사당이다.

신말주는 1454년 과거에 급제하고 여러 관직을 지냈으며, 1498년 은퇴한 후에는 부인의 고향인 순창으로 왔다. 이듬해인 1499년에는 자신의 정자인 귀래정에서 본인을 포함한 70세 이상의 노인 10명이 함께 모임을 결성하고 ‘십로계’라고 하였다. 조윤옥과 장조평 역시 십로계의 일원이었다.

덕천사는 서원철폐령에 따라 1868년에 헐렸다가, 1917년 이후에 다시 세워졌으며, 이때 십로계 모임에 참여했던 나머지 7명의 위패를 추가로 모셨다. 지금은 조윤옥의 후손인 옥천조씨 문중에서 음력 9월 8일에 제사를 올리고 있다. 덕천사 남쪽에는 강당인 숭절당이 있다.
