Local Confucian schools, called hyanggyo in Korean, are public education institutions of the Goryeo (918-1392) and Joseon (1392-1910) periods. They were established nationwide to function as local shrines for Confucius and other sages and to promote Confucian education and nurture elites in local districts. It was eventually moved to the current location in 1591 and since then it underwent several repairs. The complex, from front to back, includes a main gate, two dormitory buildings, a lecture hall called Myeongnyundang, an inner gate, two auxiliary shrines, and a main shrine called Daeseongjeon. A custodian's residence and 전교실 (? office) are on the right side of the school complex.

해설문

국문

대흥향교는 유학을 가르치기 위해 국가가 설립한 조선 시대 지방 교육기관이다. 향교는 시나 문장을 짓는 법과 유교의 경전과 역사를 가르치는 곳이자 여러 성현에게 제사를 지내는 곳이다. 갑오개혁 이후 교육 기능은 사라졌으나 봄가을에 제사를 지내고 초하루와 보름에 향을 피워 지금도 옛 성현의 정신을 기리고 있다.

대흥향교는 1405년(태종 5)에 세워진 것으로 알려져 있는데 정확한 기록이 없어 조선 건국 직후인 1400년대 초에 세워진 것으로 추정된다.

대흥향교에서는 중국의 유학자 5성(공자・안자・증자・자사・맹자)과 10철(공자의 뛰어난 제자 10명)을 비롯하여 송조 6현(송나라의 최고 유학자 6명)과 우리나라 유학자 18현(신라~조선까지의 최고 유학자 18명)의 위패를 모시고 있다. 위패를 모시는 대성전과 동무‧서무, 교육공간인 명륜당, 생활공간인 동재‧서재가 그대로 남아 있다. 오늘날 전교 1명을 비롯하여 장의 20여 명이 향교를 관리하고 있으며, 한 달에 두 차례 초하루와 보름에 작은 제사를 지내고, 봄에 춘향석전제와 가을에 추향석전제 등 일 년에 두 차례 큰제사를 지낸다. 매년 정월 초에는 은행나무제를 지내고 있다.

영문 해설 내용

향교는 고려시대와 조선시대 지방에서 유학을 교육하기 위하여 설립된 국립교육기관이다. 덕행과 학문의 모범을 보인 성현에게 제사를 올리며, 유교의 경전과 역사, 시나 문장을 짓는 법을 가르쳤다.

대흥향교는 1405년에 설립된 것으로 전해진다. 원래 현 위치에서 약 50m 북쪽에 있었다고 하는데, 1591년 지금의 위치로 옮긴 후 여러 차례 중수되었다. 현재 경내에는 앞에서부터 정문, 기숙사인 동재와 서재, 강당인 명륜당, 내삼문, 동서무, 사당인 대성전으로 구성되어 있으며, 향교 오른쪽에는 고직사와 전교실이 있다.

대성전에는 공자를 비롯한 성현 39명의 위패를 모시고 있으며, 매년 봄과 가을에 제사를 지낸다.
