The Avatamsaka Sutra is one of the most influential scriptures in East Asian Buddhism. It compares the deeds and virtues of the Buddha to flowers and suggests that the true nature of the world as told by the Buddha is like a decorative flower garland. The "Jin version" refers to the first translation of the sutra from Sanskrit to classical Chinese completed by the Indian monk Buddhabhadra (359-429) during the Chinese Jin dynasty (265-420). In Volume 53 of this 60-volume translation, the ten steps a bodhisattva must follow to achieve enlightenment are described in the form of a story about a young practitioner named Sudhana who, after seeking the teachings of 53 gurus, finally attains the wisdom of the universe.

This particular copy of Volume 53 is made of 22 pages of paper glued together at the edges to form a long scroll. The last page has a wooden rod fastened to it so that the scroll can be rolled up. The overall condition of the scroll is good, despite minor damage and some smudged ink spots. This copy differs from the Volume 53 found in the renowned Tripitaka Koreana collection kept in Haeinsa Temple, and no other extant copies or woodblocks of this same printing remain. It is therefore a valuable resource in the understanding of woodblock printing, Buddhism, and bibliography of the Goryeo period.
