The monk Seungho was active in the Gyeongsang-do area in the late 17th century. In 2017, enshrined relics and a document on the creation of the statue were discovered inside the statues, thus verifying when and by whom the statue was made. This confirmed that the statue was the first sculpture supervised by Monk Seungho, and thus helps in confirming the timeline of his artistic works.

Namjijangsa Temple is said to have been established in 684 and thereafter went through multiple reconstructions. During the Japanese invasions of 1592-1598, Master Samyeong (1544-1610) trained a civil army here. In 1767, it was given its current name, meaning the "southern temple of Ksitigarbha," as a counterpart of Bukjijangsa, i.e. the "northern temple of Ksitigarbha." Its original name is unknown.
