해설문

국문

안섬은 내도(內島)라고도 불리는 당진의 북쪽 해안 지역으로, 현재는 간척을 통해 대규모 산업단지가 조성되어 있지만, 그 이전에는 당진시의 서북쪽에 있는 섬이었으며 대표적인 어항 중 하나였다.

이 곳에서 열리는 안섬당제는 새해를 맞이하여 마을의 당산에서 수호신에게 풍어 및 고깃배의 안전을 기원하는 의식이다. 당제는 정월 첫 진일辰日에 올리는데, 격년으로 대제와 소제를 나누어 지낸다. 당제를 진일에 지내는 것은 다섯 번째 간지인 진辰이 용을 상징하기 때문이다.

1박2일간의 소제는 당제의 형태로, 2박3일간의 대제는 무당이 참여하는 당굿의 형태로 진행되며, 본제→당굿→뱃고사→거리굿→지신밝기의 순으로 진행된다.

안섬당제는 300~400년 전부터 시작되었다고 전해지며, 그 당제의 구조와 성격은 서해안 어촌마을의 공동체 신앙에서 가장 대표적인 것으로 민속학적 의미와 가치가 매우 크다. 2001년에 충청남도 무형문화재 제35호로 지정되었으며, 현재 안섬풍어당굿전수관이 설치되어 안섬당제의 맥을 이어 나가고 있다.

영문

Anseom, also called Naedo (literally “inner island”), once contained one of the most prosperous fishing ports of the local area. However, the island was incorporated into the northern coast of Dangjin through land reclamation and is now the site of a large industrial park.

The island community has maintained a multi-day ritual festival called Anseom Dangje held at the beginning of the year to honor the guardian spirit of Anseom, and pray for a bountiful catch and the safety of local fishermen. The festival is held on the first Dragon Day (in the sexagenary cycle) of the lunar year because the dragon was traditionally worshipped as the god of the sea among the fishing communities in East Asia.

Believed to have been established around the 17th century, the Anseom Dangje is widely regarded as a fine source of knowledge about the folk religion of fishing communities along the western coast of the Korean Peninsula. In 2001, the folk festival was designated as Chungcheongnam-do Intangible Cultural Heritage No. 35 and the Anseom Pungeo Danggut Center was established to systematically preserve and transmit the heritage for future generations.
