해설문

국문

괘불이란 야외에서 개최하는 불교 의식에 사용하는 대형의 불화이다. 다보사 괘불은 삼베 바탕에 진한 채색을 사용하였는데, 서 있는 석가 삼존불을 화면 가득히 배치하고 그 윗부분에 보살과 여래 등을 작게 그린 것이다.

크기는 길이 1,143cm 폭 852cm이다. 나주 금성산 보흥사(普興寺)에 있던 것을 옮겨온 것이라고 한다. 괘불 아래 좌우 모서리에 있는 *화기에는 조선 영조 21년(1745)에 그림을 그린 조선 후기의 대표적 승려 화가인 의겸을 비롯한 화원 9명의 이름이 있고, 제작자 50여 명과 시주자 120여 명의 명단도 적혀 있다. 또한 임금과 왕비, 세자가 오래도록 살기를 기원하는 내용이 기록되어 있다.

나주에 비가 오지 않아 논밭이 갈라지는 가뭄이 들면 다보사 괘불을 정수루에 걸어 놓고 기우제를 지내기도 하였다.

영문 해설 내용

괘불은 사찰에서 큰 법회나 의식을 행할 때 야외에 걸어놓고 예배를 드리는 데 쓰였다.

다보사의 괘불은 조선시대인 1745년 승려 화가인 의겸을 비롯한 9명의 화원이 함께 그렸다. 왕, 왕비, 세자의 만수무강을 기원하고, 모든 중생이 불도를 이루기를 기원하고 있다. 원래는 나주 금성산 보흥사에 모셔졌던 것을 옮겨왔다고 한다.

삼베 바탕에 진한 채색을 사용하였다. 석가모니불을 중심으로 문수보살과 보현보살로 이루어진 삼존불을 화면 가득히 배치하였고, 그 윗부분에 관음보살, 대세지보살, 다보여래, 아미타여래를 작게 그렸다. 크기는 길이 11.4m, 폭 8.5m이다.

나주 지역에 가뭄이 들면 이 괘불을 나주 관아의 정문에 걸어 놓고 기우제를 지내기도 하였다.
