Hwanghwasanseong Fortress is a Baekje Period (18 BCE–660 CE) mount fortress that is piled in soil on Bonghwa Mountain (80 m above sea level). It is a military hub that overlooks the Nonsan Plain from the top.

국문

황화산성은 등화동 봉화산에 있는 테뫼식* 토성이다. 봉화산은 구릉형의 야산으로 정상에서 논산평야를 한눈에 내려다 볼 수 있는 군사적 요충지이다. 산성의 둘레는 840m이고 흙벽의 높이는 안쪽 4.5m, 바깥쪽 5m, 성벽 위 흙벽의 위쪽 폭은 1.2m이다.

황화산성은 이곳에서 중국의 사신을 맞이한 곳이 황화대(皇華臺)이기 때문에 붙여진 이름이라고 하는데, 봉수대가 있어서 봉화산성이라고 부리기도 했다.

산성의 모습은 평면이 사각에 가깝고 동·서·북문의 터가 확인되었으며, 성안에 동쪽을 제외한 전체 둘레를 따라 내호(內濠)로 보이는 통로가 이어져 있다. 북서쪽의 모퉁이에는 조선시대에 만들어진 봉수대(烽燧臺)로 보이는 둥근 흙벽이 있다. 『신증동국여지승람(新增東國輿地勝覽)』 「은진현」 ‘봉수조’에는 채운산(彩雲山)과 노성산성을 연결하는 봉수라고 기록되어 있다.

황화산성은 성안에서 백제시대부터 조선시대까지 사용했던 많은 토기 조각과 기와 조각 등이 발견됨에 따라 사비와 웅진을 지킨 백제시대의 산성이자 봉화를 밝힌 조선시대의 산성으로 전략과 통신의 요충지였음을 알 수 있다. 전설에 의하면 황화산성은 백제 의자왕이 잔치를 베풀며 유흥을 즐겼던 곳으로도 알려져 있다.

산성은 사각형에 가깝고, 성벽의 동·서·북쪽에서 성문터가 확인되었다. 성벽 안쪽에서는 도랑처럼 판 통로가 발견되었다. 성벽 북서쪽에서는 발견된 약 2.2m 높이의 둥근 흙벽이 발견되었는데, 조선시대에 만들어진 봉수대로 추정된다. 기록에 따르면 이곳의 봉수대는 남쪽 강경산에서 신호를 받아 북쪽 노성산성으로 연결하였다고 한다. 성안에서 출토된 유물에는 백제시대부터 조선시대에 이르는 토기 조각과 기와 조각 등이 있다.
