국문

노성향교는 노성면 송당리 월명곡(현 노성초등학교 자리)에 있는 교육 기관이다. 노성향교가 언제 세워졌는지 정확한 시기는 알 수 없으나 은진향교와 비슷한 1380년(고려 우왕 6년)에 세워졌을 것으로 추정된다. 임진왜란과 병자호란을 겪은 후 1700여 년경에 지금의 자리로 옮겼는데, 그 이유는 알 수 없으나 명륜당 현판에 의하면 1631년(인조 9)에 현감이 문묘를 중수하였다는 기록이 있다. 조선시대에는 국가로부터 토지와 전적, 노비 등을 지급받아 유생을 가르쳤으나 갑오개혁 이후부터 학제가 개편되면서 향교의 교육적 기능이 사라졌다.

노성향교에는 바깥 대문인 외삼문(外三門)과 유생들의 기숙사인 양현재(養賢齋), 향교 관리인이 머무는 모화당(慕化堂), 유생들이 공부하는 명륜당(明倫堂), 안채로 들어가는 대문인 내삼문(內三門), 성현의 위패를 모시는 대성전(大成殿) 등이 있다. 그런데 서재가 있어야 할 자리에 향교 관리인이 머무는 수직사를 별도로 둔 점이나 수식사를 향교와 담을 두지 않고 배치한 점은 일반적인 향교의 구조와 다르다. 대성전은 앞면 3칸·옆면 2칸의 겹처마 맞배지붕 구조이다. 이곳에 공자의 영정을 비롯하여 안자·증자·자사·맹자 등 5성(五聖)과 정이와 주희 등 송조 2현(宋朝二賢), 우리나라의 18현(十八賢) 등 모두 5성 20현의 위패를 모시고 매년 음력 2월과 8월에 제향하는데 대성전에 송나라 2현만을 모신 경우는 매우 이례적이나 정확한 이유는 알 수 없다.
