Local Confucian schools, called ''hyanggyo'' in Korean, are public education institutions of the Goryeo (918-1392) and Joseon (1392-1910) periods. They were established nationwide to function as local shrines for Confucius and other sages and to promote Confucian education and nurture elites in local districts. Students learned about literature including poetry composition, Confucian Classics, and history.

Namhaehyanggyo was built in 1450 on the slopes of Mt. Bonggangsan. After it was burnt during the Japanese invasion in 1592, Daeseongjeon Hall was rebuilt in 1669 followed by Myeongryundang Hall in 1678. Daeseongjeon Hall was moved to its current location in 1892; Myeongyundang Hall and the other attached buildings in 1917. Rituals for Confucian sages are held every spring and autumn.
 
  
Today there remains the Hongsalmun Gate, main gate, East and West dormitory, Myeongyundang Hall, Naesammun gate (Inner Gate with three doors), two storages-Dongmu and Seomu, and Daeseongjeon Hall. On the left after passing through the main gate is a stone platform called Seongsaengdan which was used to examine pigs used in rituals.

해설문

국문

향교는 고려 시대와 조선 시대에 지방에서 유학을 가르치고 인재를 기르기 위해 국가가 세운 교육 기관으로, 지금의 중・고등학교 수준의 교육을 담당하였다. 유교 경전과 역사, 시나 문장을 짓는 법을 주로 가르치는 곳이었으며, 덕행과 학문의 모범을 보인 성현에게 제사를 지내는 곳으로도 사용되었다. 남해향교는 세종 32년(1450)에 세워진 향교이며, 지금은 봄과 가을에 성현에게 제사를 지내고 있다.

현재 남아 있는 건물은 대성전, 동무, 서무, 내삼문, 외삼문, 명륜당, 동재, 서재, 관리사, 홍살문 등이다. 명륜당 등 학문을 배우는 곳을 앞에 두고, 대성전을 비롯하여 제사를 지내는 곳을 뒤에 둔 전학후묘(前學後廟) 구조로 되어 있다.

남해향교는 원래 봉강산 아래에 있었다. 명륜당과 대성전이 임진왜란 때 모두 불에 타 조선 현종 10년(1669)에 대성전을, 숙종 4년(1678)에 명륜당을 다시 지었다. 고종 29년(1892)에 대성전을 지금의 자리로 옮겼고, 1917년에 명륜당과 나머지 건물들도 모두 옮겼다.

서재의 남쪽에 담장을 붙여 돌단을 쌓은 성생단(省牲壇)은 살아 있는 돼지 등을 검사하는 곳으로 다른 향교에서는 많이 볼 수 없는 특이한 점이다. 또한 이곳에는 당시 지역 유학자나 유학을 공부하는 유생 등의 인적 사항을 기록한 명단이 보존되어 있다. 이는 지방 향토사 연구에 귀중한 자료로 활용된다.

향교는 고려시대와 조선시대 지방에서 유학을 교육하기 위하여 설립된 국립교육기관이다. 덕행과 학문의 모범을 보인 성현에게 제사를 올리며, 유교의 경전과 역사, 시나 문장을 짓는 법을 가르쳤다.

남해향교는 1450년 봉강산 기슭에 처음 지어졌다. 임진왜란 때 모두 불에 타 없어진 후 1669년에 대성전을, 1678년에 명륜당을 다시 지었다. 1892년에 대성전을 지금의 자리로 옮겼고, 1917년에 명륜당과 나머지 건물들도 모두 옮겼다. 지금도 대성전에서는 매년 봄과 가을에 성현에게 제사를 지낸다.

현재 경내에는 앞쪽에서부터 홍살문, 정문, 기숙사인 동재와 서재, 명륜당, 내삼문, 동무와 서무, 대성전 등이 남아 있다. 정문을 들어서서 왼쪽에는 성생단이 있는데, 이는 제사 때 제물로 쓰이는 돼지를 검사하던 곳이다.
