When the Japanese invaded Jeonju, the seat of the royal family's clan, An Ui and Son Hong-rok moved royal portraits and copies of the ''Annals of the Joseon Dynasty'' from the local royal shrine Gyeonggijeon to a hermitage in Naejangsan Mountain in Jeongeup. All repositories for the ''Annals'' were burnt down during the war, and only the copies saved from Jeonju survived. If it was not for this, the history of the first 200 years of the Joseon dynasty (1932-1910) would have been lost forever.

This shrine was originally built in 1676 but was once demolished when most shrines and Confucian academies were shut down by a nationwide decree in the late 19th century. The current building was reconstructed in 1926.
