해설문

국문

당산은 마을의 수호신인 당산신당산할아버지와 당산할머니을 모시고 마을의 풍요와 평안 등을 기원하는 제사를 지내는 곳이다. 남원 서천리 당산에는 남녀 한 쌍의 돌장승이 서 있다. 외형상으로는 남녀를 구분하기 쉽지 않은데 남쪽에 서 있는 장승이 남장승, 북쪽에 서 있는 장승이 여장승이라고 전해진다. 각각의 돌장승에는 ‘방어대장군(防禦大將軍)’, ‘진서대장군(鎭西大將軍)’이라는 글이 새겨져 있는데 이는 악한 기운을 막는다는 뜻이다. 두 장승은 모두 수염이 있고 벙거지를 썼는데 여장승인 진서대장군은 귀가 없다. 두 장승이 부부 싸움을 하다가 진서대장군의 목이 부러져 마을 사람들이 붙였다는 이야기가 전해진다. 남원 서천리 당산의 돌장승은 마을을 수호한다는 신앙적 의미뿐만 아니라 서민의 소박한 표정을 보여 준다는 점에서 민속 문화재로서의 가치를 갖는다.

Village Guardians in Seocheon-ri, Namwon

Village guardians are local spirits which are believed to spiritually protect the village according to folk tradition. Rituals are held for village guardians to wish for an abundant harvest and the wellbeing of the village.

In Seocheon-ri, the village guardians are represented by two stone guardian posts, a male and a female, facing each other at the entrance to the village in Seorim Park. They both wear hats and feature large bulbous noses and protruding round eyes. The male guardian has no ears and has a narrower face than the female guardian.
