해설문
국문
남원 몽심재 고택은 연당 박동식(蓮堂 朴東式, 1753~1830)이 지었다고 한다. 고택의 뒤에는 산이, 앞에는 낮은 구릉이 있다. 여러 채의 건물이 산자락의 경사면을 따라 앞뒤로 높이를 다르게 하여 담장 안에 세워져 있다. 대문에 들어서면 마당이 넓게 펼쳐져 있는데 마당의 끝부분에 축대를 쌓고 그 위에 사랑채를 지었다. 사랑채 옆의 중문채를 지나면 안채가 있다. 안채도 아래 공간을 외양간으로 사용할 수 있을 정도로 받침을 높게 하여 지었다. 건물들이 높이 솟아 있음에도 주변 경관과 어우러져 고풍스러운 멋과 그윽한 정취를 자아낼 만큼 뛰어난 조형미를 보여 준다. 이 고택은 원형이 대체로 잘 보존되어 있어 조선시대 호남 지역 양반가의 전형적 주거 양식을 알 수 있다.
이 고택은 특이하게도 사랑채에 팔각기둥을 사용하였고 아랫사람이 거주하는 문간채 동쪽에 대청을 한 칸 들였다. 이 대청은 일하는 사람들을 배려한 공간이었을 것으로 추정된다.
영문
Mongsimjae House, Namwon
This house is believed to have been built by Bak Dong-sik (1753-1830). It is located in Homsil Village, a clan village of the Juksan Bak Clan.
The house complex is built on a steep slope. It is enclosed by a wall and consists of a women’s quarters, men’s quarters, gate quarters, servant’s quarters, inner gate quarters, a storehouse, other auxiliary buildings, and garden with a pond.
The men’s quarters sits atop a raised platform and has a series of underfloor-heated rooms from the left, a wooden-floored hall on the far right, a narrow wooden veranda in the front, and a kitchen in the back. It features octagonal pillars which are highly unusual. The name of this house is written on a plaque hanging at the front of this building.
The women’s quarters consists of a wooden-floored hall, underfloor-heated rooms, wooden-floored verandas, two kitchens, and storage areas. There are attics above the rooms at the front, giving height to the building which looks especially imposing.
The phrase “mongsim” in the name literally means “dream heart” and is a reference to a poem by Goryeo period (918-1392) civil official Bak Mun-su, an ancestor of Bak Dong-sik.
