Mongsimjae House, Namwon

This house is believed to have been built by Bak Dong-sik (1753-1830). It is located in Homsil Village, a clan village of the Juksan Bak Clan.

The house complex is built on a steep slope. It is enclosed by a wall and consists of a women’s quarters, men’s quarters, gate quarters, servant’s quarters, inner gate quarters, a storehouse, other auxiliary buildings, and garden with a pond.

The men’s quarters sits atop a raised platform and has a series of underfloor heated rooms from the left, a wooden-floored hall on the far right, a narrow wooden veranda in the front, and a kitchen in the back. It features octagonal pillars which are highly unusual. The name of the house is written on a plaque hanging at the front of this building.

The women’s quarters consists of a wooden-floored halls, four underfloor heated rooms, wooden-floored verandas, and a kitchen with an attic above at each side in the front, which make the building look as if it is two-stories.

The gate quarters, which is where the servants lived, features a wooden-floored hall which is believed to be a sign of courtesy of the owner.

The phrase “mongsim” in the name literally means “dreaming heart,” and is a reference to a poem by Goryeo period (918-1392) military official Bak Mun-su, which reads “The willow trees at the back of the village seem to be dreaming of Tao Yuanming, and the bracken up in the mountain seems to be impassioned with the heart of the loyal brothers Boyi and Shuqi.”
