낙산사 해수관음상은 당시 주지 원철圓徹스님의 원력으로 양질의 화강암 산지로 손꼽는 전라북도 익산에서 석재 700여 톤을 운반하여 1972년부터 불사를 시작하여 5년 만인 1977년 11월에 점안*하였다. 높이 16m, 둘레 3.3m, 최대 너비 6m로 대좌 앞부분에 두 마리의 용을 조각하고, 양 옆으로는 사천왕상*을 조각하였다.

관음상은 대좌 위에 해수관음상 둘레에 조성된 108법륜석은 2005년 4월 낙산사 화재 이후 불법이 더욱 번창하여 중생의 번뇌를 깨달음으로 성화(聖化)시킨다는 의미에서 조성한 것이다. 108개의 장판석과 48개의 바퀴살을 화강암으로 깔았으며 2008년 6월 20일에 완성하였다.


  • 점안(點眼) : 불상을 만들거나 불화를 그리고 나서, 마지막으로 눈동자를 그려 넣는 것
  • 사천왕상(四天王像) : 수미산(불교에서 세계의 중심에 있다고 하는 상상의 산, 사천왕과 제석천이 사는 산)의 각 방향을 지키며 악귀를 쫓아냄. 무서운 얼굴을 하고, 갑옷을 입은 장수의 모습. 발밑에 악귀를 밟고, 손에 무기를 들고 있음.
