승탑은 승려의 사리를 모신 무덤의 일종으로 부도나 사리탑이라고도 한다. 승탑은 받침돌(기단부)과 몸돌(탑신부), 지붕돌(옥개석), 지붕 머리(상륜부)로 나뉘는데, 불회사 원진 국사 승탑은 지붕 머리는 없고 다른 부분은 잘 남아 있다. 몸돌 앞면에는 ‘원진국사통조지탑(圓眞國師通照之塔)’이라는 당호와 함께 ‘연우4년 정사5월 일립(延祐四年丁巳五月 日立)’이라는 조성 연대(1317년 고려 충숙왕 4)가 새겨져 있다. 이 승탑은 주인공과 제작 연대를 알 수 있어서 가치가 있으며, 고려 후기의 승탑 양식을 이해하는 데에 중요한 자료가 되고 있다.

고려 중기의 고승 원진 국사는 13세에 승려가 된 후에 수도에 힘써 1215년에 대선사*가 되었다. 왕의 부름으로 보경사의 주지*가 되어 활동하다가 1221년 8월 팔공산 염불암에서 숨을 거두었다. 고려 고종은 ‘원진’이라는 시호*를 내리고 나라의 스승이라는 의미인 ‘국사’로 예우하였다.
