Geumsansa Temple was first established in 599 during the Baekje period (18 BCE-660 CE). In 766, during the Unified Silla period (668-935), it was expanded by Monk Jinpyo. After Jinpyo became a Buddhist monk at Geumsansa Temple at the age of 12, it is said that he wandered the country travelling to sacred mountains while practicing meditation, and eventually was ordained by Ksitigarbha (Bodhisattva of Great Vows) and Maitreya (Future Buddha). Geumsansa became the head temple of the cult of Maitreya, which believes Maitreya will bring salvation to the world. Furthermore, it became known as a sacred site of the Consciousness-Only School (Yogachara), which is founded on Maitreya’s teachings.

In 1079, during the Goryeo period (918-1392), the temple's head monk Sohyeon (1038-1096, i.e. Royal Preceptor Hyedeok) once again expanded the temple to include three large areas: the main section where the relics or remains of the Buddha were enshrined, a section where Buddhist scriptures were taught and published, and a section where monks practiced meditation. It was at this time the temple reached its greatest size, and it is presumed that the majority of the temple's remaining stone monuments date to this period.

In 1076, during the Goryeo period (918-1392), Sohyeon (1038-1096, pen name: Hyedeogwangsa) while being the chief Buddhist monk, rebuilt the temple once again, and it became the largest Buddhist temple of its time. The large complex consisted of the main temple quarters, where the relics or remains of the Buddha were enshrined, Gwanggyowon Hermitage, where Buddhist scriptures were taught and published, and Bongcheonwon Hermitage, where monks practiced asceticism. It is presumed that the majority of the temple's remaining stone heritages date to this period.

In the Joseon period (1392-1910), amidst the Japanese invasions of 1592, one of the temple's monks, Cheoyeong, organized an army of 1,000 monks, trained them here, and even participated in battle. Due to the retaliation of the Japanese army, the entire temple and its affiliated Buddhist hermitages were destroyed by fire. In 1601, some monks and disciples started rebuilding the temple, and by 1635, the main area for enshrining the Buddha were enshrined. The other two areas for lectures and meditation were not rebuilt.
