해설문
국문
명부전은 시왕전, 지장전이라고도 한다. 지장보살은 지옥에서 고통받는 중생들을 구원하는 보살이며, 시왕은 지옥에서 죽은 자의 죄를 심판하는 10명의 왕을 말한다.
김제 귀신사 명부전 소조지장보살좌상과 시왕상은 중앙의 지장보살좌상을 중심으로 도명존자, 무독귀왕을 비롯해 10위의 시왕상과 판관상, 녹사상이 좌우에 배치되어 있다. 시왕마다 동자상들이 함께 있고 입구에는 인왕상 1쌍이 세워져 있어 모두 29위의 소조상이 모셔져 있다. 이 불상들은 영산전 불상 발원문에 의해 조성연대도 알 수 있으며, 지장보살좌상과 시왕상 등이 잘 보존되어 있다. 또한, 본존이 드물게 두건을 쓴 지장보살의 모습이라는 점에서 문화재적 가치가 크다.
영문
Clay Seated Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva and Ten Underworld Kings in Myeongbujeon Hall of Gwisinsa Temple, Gimje
There are a total of 29 sculptures enshrined in Myeongbujeon Hall, among which are the statues of Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva and Ten Underworld Kings. All statues are presumed to have been made in the 17th century.
In the center on the altar, there is a statue of Ksitigarbha, the Bodhisattva of Great Vows, who took on the responsibility of rescuing unfortunate beings from hell and vowed to postpone Buddhahood until all beings are saved from the world of suffering. To his left and right, respectively, are Demon King Wudu, depicted wearing a king’s crown, and the sage monk Daoming, with a bald head.
On either side of the altar are the statues of the Ten Underworld Kings who preside over the judgment of the dead, ten child attendants, two judges, two officials, and two wrathful guardians.
영문 해설 내용
명부전에는 지장보살삼존상과 시왕상을 비롯하여 총 29구의 존상이 모셔져 있다. 모두 17세기에 조성된 것으로 추정된다.
가운데 불단 위에는 지장보살좌상을 중심으로 좌우에 무독귀왕과 도명존자가 서 있다. 지장보살은 지옥에서 고통받는 중생을 구원하며, 모든 중생을 구원할 때까지 성불을 미루는 보살이다. 무독귀왕은 머리에 왕관을 쓰고 있고, 도명존자는 민머리이다.
삼존상의 좌우에는 저승에서 죽은 자의 죄를 심판하는 시왕상과 동자상, 판관상, 녹사상, 인왕상이 좌우로 배치되어 있다.
