This is the stele of Kim Sang-yong (1561-1637), a civil official of the mid-Joseon period. In 1636, when the Manchus invaded Joseon, he moved the royal memorial tablets from Jongmyo, the royal shrine of the Joseon dynasty, to Ganghwado Island for protection. He also escorted royal family members to take refuge in here. However, Ganghwado fell to the enemy the next year, and so Kim committed suicide. His memorial tablet is enshrined in Chungnyeolsa Shrine in Ganghwa (Incheon Tangible Cultural Heritage No. 21).

There are two steles in the commemorative pavilion. The original stele, standing on the right, was erected in 1700 by the great-grandson of Kim’s brother. In 1817, after this stele eroded, Kim’s 7th-generation descendant buried it and erected a new stele. In 1976, the original stele was excavated, and the two steles were erected together in the pavilion.

해설문

국문

조선 인조 때의 문신인 김상용의 충의를 추모하고 기리기 위해 세운 비이다. 선원 김상용(1561∼1637)은 1590년 문과에 급제하여 판돈녕부사, 병조·예조·이조의 판서와 유도대장(留都大將), 우의정 등을 역임하였다. 병자호란이 일어나자 종묘의 신주를 모시고 빈궁과 원손을 수행하여 강화도로 피란했으나 성이 함락되자 성의 남문루에 있던 화약에 불을 지른 후 순절하였다. 이러한 충절을 기리고자 비를 세웠으며, 선원면에 있는 충렬사에 위패를 모셨다. 비각 안에는 2기의 비가 나란히 있는데, 왼쪽 비석은 정조 때 공의 7대손인 김매순이 세운 것이고, 오른쪽 비석은 숙종 26년(1700) 종증손 김창집이 건립한 것으로 1976년 지금의 자리로 비각을 옮기던 중 땅속에서 발견되었다.

영문용 원고

조선 중기의 문신 김상용(1561-1637)의 충절을 기리기 위해 세운 비이다. 김상용은 1636년 병자호란이 일어나자 종묘의 신주를 모시고 왕족을 수행하여 강화도로 피난했으며, 성이 함락되자 순절하였다. 김상용의 위패는 충렬사에 모셨다.

비각 안에는 2기의 비가 있다. 오른쪽 비는 1700년에 김상용의 종증손인 김창집이 세운 원래의 비이고, 왼쪽 비는 1817년 김상용의 7대손 김매순이 새로 세운 것이다. 새 비를 세우면서 원래의 비는 땅에 묻었었는데, 1976년 비각을 옮기던 중 원래의 비가 발견되어 두 비를 함께 세웠다.
