Yi Gwang-jin passed the state examination in 1546 and took part in the writing of the Annals of King Jungjong (r. 1506-1544) and King Injong (r. 1544-1545). He lived as a government official until his retirement in 1565. After retirement, he returned to his hometown where he built Geumsidang Hall and dedicated his life to studying. Geumsidang means “hall of the now," and comes from a verse by the Chinese poet Tao Yuanming (365-427) about '''how the mistakes of the past can reveal the proper path one must take in the present/how one must not dwell on past mistakes but rather focus on the path to take in the present'''. After Yi Gwang-jin died, his son used this villa as a lecture hall to educate the next generation of students.
