This stone Maitreya Buddha is presumed to have been built during the Goryeo period (1392-1910). It is carved from a single mass of granite stone which measures 4.4 m in height. Maitreya Buddha, known as “the Buddha of the Future,” is believed to appear 567 billion years after Sakyamuni’s entrance to Nirvana. This Buddha’s headdress is decorated with circular patterns and a seated Buddha on a lotus flower at the center, which represents the "emanation body (Nirmanakaya)," i.e. the human-like body the Buddha manifested on Earth in order to teach humankind. On top of the headdress is placed a square-shaped stone slab.

This Buddha features characteristics typical of the Goryeo period, including the massive size and the rough ficial and bodily expressions. According to a folktale in the area, a couple of stone Maitreya Buddhas sprang up in the middle of the Okgyecheon Stream in this area during the Silla period (57 BCE – 935 CE). Currently, this Maitreya Buddha remains alone, and it is uncertain whether this is the one of the two Buddhas in the tale.
