This statue was carved from wood, lacquered, and gilded. The jewel-like spot carved between the Buddha's eyebrows is a tuft of white hair which symbolizes his mercy shining out to the world. The three creases encircling his neck represent the “three destinies” of afflictions, actions, and suffering.
