Dorisa Temple is known to be the first Buddhist temple built in the Silla kingdom (57 BCE-935 CE). It was established in the 5th century by Monk Ado who came from the neighboring Goguryeo kingdom (37 BCE-668 CE) to promote Buddhism. It is said Monk Ado travelled to this area in winter and found peach and plum flowers in full bloom. He built a temple at this site and named it Dorisa which means “temple of peach and plum flowers.”

해설문

국문

구미 도리사 극락전은 극락세계를 관장한다는 아미타불을 모신 법당이다. 정확한 건립 연대는 알 수 없으나 효종 1년(1650)에 지문대사가 확장하여 지었다고 전한다. 고종 12년(1875)에 용해龍海화상이 낡은 부분을 고친 후에 오늘날까지 형태를 유지하고 있다.

외부 앙서1)와 상부 익공2)을 얹은 지붕의 바깥 구조와 건물 안 닫집의 형상이 경복궁 근정전과 비슷하며, 조선 말기의 건축 특징을 갖추고 있다. 안에는 인조 23년(1645)에 제작한 아미타후불탱3)을 모셨고, 근래에 지장탱4)과 신중탱5)을 제작하여 모셨다.

건물 안 단청에 ‘연지회상蓮池會上’이라는 글씨와 구품연대6) 그림이 남아 있는데, 이는 연못에서 아미타불이 극락세계에 모여 있는 모든 보살 신장에게 설법하는 장면을 표현한 것이다.

영문 해설 내용

극락전은 아미타불을 봉안한 법당이다. 아미타불의 공덕을 기리고 그의 이름을 염(念)하는 모든 중생들은 극락세계에 왕생할 수 있다고 여겨진다.

도리사는 고구려의 승려인 아도화상이 5세기경 신라에 불교를 전하며 창건한 신라 최초의 사찰이라고 전해진다. 아도가 이 지역을 지나는 길에, 겨울인데도 복숭아꽃과 오얏꽃이 만발하여 있음을 보고 절을 짓고 ‘복숭아와 오얏’이라는 뜻의 도리사라는 이름을 지었다고 한다.

극락전은 언제 처음 지어졌는지는 알 수 없고, 현재의 건물은 19세기에 중건된 것이다. 지붕을 받치는 화려한 공포가 설치되어 있는데, 기둥 위뿐만 아니라 기둥과 기둥 사이에도 두었다. 지붕의 네 추녀 밑에는 보조기둥을 두었다.

전각 내부에는 목조아미타여래좌상(경상북도 문화재자료 제314호)과 아미타후불탱이 모셔져 있다.
