해설문

국문

신라 문무왕 17년(677년)에 의상조사께서 조성한 것으로 이 탑의 높이는 6.36m이며 우리나라 최대의 석등이다. 꽃잎 형태는 우담바라화로 이 꽃은 3천년 만에 한 번 핀다고 하여 부처님 오심이 지극히 드문 일이라 비유한다.

꽃의 8잎은 8정도[정견(正見), 정념(正念), 정정진(正精進), 정명(正命), 정업(正業), 정어(正語), 정사유(正思惟), 정정(正定)]이고, 4개의 화창(火窓)은 사성제[고집멸도(苦集滅道)]와 부처님의 광명이며, 북의 모습은 진리의 소리이다.

즉 팔정도로 수행하여 사성제의 진리의 이치를 밝히고 광명을 놓으시며 진리의 소리를 중생들에게 들려주시어 마음의 등불[자등명 법등명(自燈明 法燈明)]로 세계를 밝혀 주시는 부처님의 참다운 모습을 볼 수 있는 석등이다.

영문 해설 내용

석등은 불전에 등불을 공양하기 위해 세우는 구조물이다.

화강암으로 만들어진 이 석등은 통일신라시대에 세워진 것으로 전해진다. 각황전의 위용과 조화를 이루기 위해 높이가 6.36m에 달하는 거대한 규모로 만들어졌으며, 현재 한국에 남아있는 석등 중 가장 크다.

연꽃무늬가 새겨진 둥근 받침돌, 장구 모양의 기둥, 팔각 화사석과 지붕돌, 머리장식으로 이루어져 있으며, 각 부분이 모두 온전히 남아있다. 기둥 부분을 장구 모양으로 만든 것은 통일신라 후기에 유행했던 양식이다.
