Unjoru House, Gurye

This house was built by Yu I-ju (1726-1797), a military official of the late period of the Joseon dynasty (1392-1910). In 1771, Yu was dispatched to Nagan (today’s Suncheon area) as a magistrate. Upon arrival, he began building this house which was finished in 1776. The house is representative of upper-class residences of the Joseon period. According to Korean feng shui principles, this location is regarded as one of the three most auspicious places for a house in South Korea.

This house consists of a servant’s quarters, men’s quarters, secondary men's quarters, storehouse, women’s quarters, and a shrine. The servants’ quarters are the long linear building at the front of the complex with the main gate in the center. This servants’ quarters of this house was the largest among Joseon literati houses. This shows the prosperity and status of the household.

The entrance leads to the courtyard where the men’s quarters stands. The larger main men's quarters on the left was used by the master of the house while the smaller secondary men's quarters to the right was used by his son. The rooms in the men's quarters are separated by walls made of liftable doors which allow the spaces to be joined into a single large room when necessary. This building also features an elevated wooden-floored porch. Next to the porch, there is a ramp made of stone, which allowed servants to carry heavy parcels into the house on a wheeled cart.

The inner gate in the men’s quarters area leads to the women’s quarters which was used by the wife, daughters-in-law, and children of the house. The women's quarters and storehouse form a square shape with a courtyard in the center. This is not typical of Jeolla-do region houses which usually have linear or L-shaped women's quarters which do not allow for an enclosed inner courtyard. This suggests the design of this house was influenced by the architectural style of Yu’s hometown in the Gyeongsang-do region.

Unjoru Hall

This building is the men’s quarters. It is named Unjoru, which means “a secluded pavilion like a bird’s nest in the clouds” or “a pavilion to which a bird flying high above cloud returns.” It is said this building was named by borrowing the characters – cloud and bird – from two lines of a poem entitled “The Return” written by Tao Yuanming (365-427), one of the greatest poets of China's Six dynasties period.

The cloud, without intention, emerges from the mountain top.
The bird, weary from flight, knows to return.

Mortuary Room

This room functioned as a space to temporarily hold the body of a family member after they passed away. During the Joseon period (1392-1910), the upper class followed strict funerary and mourning rituals in which the body was put in a coffin on the third day after death, and then kept in this room until the third month after death, only after which it was buried. This long period served to notify the relatives and associates in different provinces of the death of the family member and let them come and attend the memorial service. During this period, a sacrifice was offered to the deceased every morning and evening, and a ritual ceremony was performed on the first and fifteenth days of each month.

"Other People May Unlatch" Rice Container

This wooden container filled with rice was placed where it could be easily accessed so that anyone in need of rice could take some. The four Chinese characters written at the bottom of the jar mean "other people (not of the family) may unlatch (the lid)." The philanthropic spirit and caring acts of this family towards its neighbors have long been greatly appreciated.
