해설문

국문

연곡사 북승탑은 네모난 바닥돌 위에 세워진 8각형의 승탑이다. 전체적으로 규모와 형태, 각 부분의 장식과 조각이 연곡사 동승탑과 약간의 차이를 보일 뿐 거의 동일한 모습을 띄고 있다.

기단은 3층으로 아래받침돌, 가운데받침돌, 윗받침돌로 이루어져있다. 아래받침돌은 2단으로, 아래에는 구름무늬를 위에는 두 겹으로 된 16잎의 연꽃무늬를 각각 새겨두었다. 윗받침돌 역시 두 단으로 나누어 연꽃과 돌난간을 아래위로 꾸몄다. 특히 윗단에는 둥근 테를 두르고, 그 속에 불교의 낙원에 산다는 극락조인 가릉빈가(迦陵頻迦)를 돋을새김 하였다.

탑신의 몸돌 각 면에는 향로와 불법을 수호하는 방위신인 사천왕상(四天王像) 등을 꾸며놓았다.

이 승탑은 통일신라 말기에 건립된 연곡사 동승탑을 모방하여 고려 초기에 건립된 것으로 추정되며, 사찰 내에 현각선사탑비가 있는 것으로 보아 현각선사승탑으로 추정된다.

영문 해설 내용

승탑은 스님의 사리나 유골을 모셔 놓은 일종의 무덤이다.

이 승탑은 고려 초기에 건립된 것으로 추정된다. 누구의 승탑인지는 알려지지 않았다.

이 팔각형의 승탑은 기단, 몸돌, 지붕돌, 상륜부로 구성되어 있다. 통일신라시대에 만들어진 동승탑(국보 제53호)을 모방하여 만들었는데, 크기와 형태는 거의 같고 세부적인 장식에서 약간 차이가 있다. 기단은 구름무늬, 연꽃무늬, 또는 가릉빈가를, 몸돌은 문 모양, 향로, 또는 사천왕을 새겼다. 상륜부는 일부 파손되었다.
