해설문

국문

연곡사 동승탑은 통일신라시대를 대표하는 스님의 사리탑 가운데 가장 형태가 아름답고 장식과 조각이 정교한 작품이다.

맨 아랫돌에는 팔각으로 구름 속의 용이 장식되었고 그 위에 중대석 받침에는 면마다 형태가 다른 사자상이 새겨져 있다. 지붕돌은 목조건축의 지붕을 충실하게 따르고 있는데 기왓골, 처마, 기와 각 부분의 장식이 매우 섬세하게 나타나있고 지붕 아랫면에는 구름문양과 하늘을 아는 여자 선인(仙人)이 조각되어 있다. 지붕마루 측면에 작은 종을 걸었던 구멍이 있고 그 윗부분에는 잡상을 얹었던 흔적이 있다. 탑의 가장 윗부분은 연꽃, 봉황, 보주 등으로 세밀하고 아름답게 장식하였다.

도선국사의 사리가 안치된 탑이라 전해지고 있으며 일제 때 동경대학으로 반출될 위기도 있었으나 다행히도 제자리를 지키고 있다. 통일신라 후기를 대표할 만한 우수한 작품으로 평가받고 있다.
