Yeongoksa Temple, Gurye

Yeongoksa Temple is said to have been established in the mid-6th century by an Indian monk known as Yeongi in Korean. The name of the temple means "temple in the valley of barn swallows." It is said that before the temple was built, there was a pond at this site over which barn swallows enjoyed flying.

The temple experienced its zenith from the Unified Silla period (668-935) to the early period of the Goryeo dynasty (918-1393). During this period, the temple was overseen by eminent Buddhist monks. However, beginning in the middle period of the Joseon dynasty (1392-1910), the temple went through a repetitive process of destruction and reconstruction. First, the temple was destroyed by fire during the Japanese invasion of 1598, and was rebuilt in 1627 by Monk Soyo. After the signing of the Japan–Korea Treaty of 1905, which made Korea a protectorate of Japan, the temple was used as a base by anti-Japanese civilian armies from the Jeolla region. However, due to the civilian armies, the Japanese army destroyed the temple in 1907. In 1924, some halls of the temple were rebuilt, but due to the Korean War (1950-1953), the temple was once again destroyed in 1950. The current temple buildings were constructed after 1980.

This temple contains numerous cultural heritages such as the East Stupa (National Treasure No. 53), North Stupa (National Treasure No. 54), Three-story Stone Pagoda (Treasure No. 151), Stele of Master Hyeongak (Treasure No. 152), East Stele (Treasure No. 153), and Stupa of Buddhist Monk Soyo (Treasure No. 154).
