해설문

국문

광양 옥룡사 동백나무 숲은 통일 신라 말기의 승려 선각국사 도선(先覺國師 道詵)*이 옥룡사의 땅 기운을 도와서 채우기 위하여 조성하였다고 전해 오는 숲이다. 현재 수령 100년 이상 된 동백나무 1만여 그루가 절터 주변에 군락을 이루어 천년의 역사를 이어 오고 있다. 이숲은 남부 지방 사찰 숲의 원형을 잘 유지하고 있다. 경관으로 보거나 학술적으로 보거나 보존할 가치가 높아서 천연기념물로 지정하였다.

옥룡사는 현재 흔적만 남기고 사라졌으나, 국내 최대의 이 동백나무 숲은 해마다 2월부터 4월까지 붉은 동백꽃을 피우고 있다. 이 숲은 2006년에 산림청이 주관한 아름다운 천년의 숲 분야에서 우수상을 받았다. 동백꽃의 꽃말은 ‘그대를 누구보다 사랑합니다.’이다.


  • 도선은 827년 전남 영암에서 출생하여 864년부터 35년간 옥룡사에 주석하였다. 이곳에서 많은 제자를 길러내고 898년에 입적하였다. 고려 인종(1122~1146)때에 선각국사로 추봉(追封)되었다.

영문 해설 내용

동백나무는 차나무과에 속하는 상록활엽교목으로 한국, 중국, 일본에 자생한다.

이곳은 한국 최대의 동백나무 숲으로 수령이 100년 이상 된 동백나무 1만여 그루가 군락을 이루고 있다. 한국의 동백나무는 주로 해안지대에 분포하기 때문에, 이처럼 내륙에 숲을 형성한 것은 매우 드문 사례이다.

전해지는 이야기에 따르면, 통일신라 말기의 승려 도선이 옥룡사를 창건하면서 이 숲을 처음 조성했다고 전해진다. 숲의 서쪽으로 약 200여 미터 떨어진 곳에 옥룡사의 옛 터가 남아있다.
