Lady Ryu was the daughter of Ryu Jun (1321-1406), a military official of the late Goryeo (918-1392) and early Joseon periods. She married into the Eunjin Song clan but became a widow at the age of 22. It is said that close family members tried to remarry her, but she walked from her natal home in Gaeseong (in present-day North Korea) to her husband's home in Hoedeok (today's Daejeon), carrying her 4-year-old son, Song Yu (1389-1446) on her back. Lady Ryu served her in-laws with great care and devoted herself to raising her son benevolently, resulting in Song Yu’s descendants becoming esteemed scholar-politicians and the Eunjin Song clan taking its place as a prestigious family. A commemorative plaque in recognition of Lady Ryu’s matrimonial devotion was bestowed in 1653.
