해설문

국문

고부 관아터는 백제 때부터 성황산에 있었던 고부 관아가 영조 41년(1765)에 옮겨와서 철거되기까지 있던 곳이다. 고부 관아는 1894년 1월 10일(음력) 고부 봉기 때 전봉준을 중심으로 한 농민군이 이곳을 점령하고 탐관오리를 몰아내면서 동학농민운동의 시작을 알렸던 역사적 현장이기도 하다.

1911년 고부 관아의 모든 건물이 철거되고 그 자리에 고부 공립 보통학교가 건립되었다. 이러한 사실에서 전통문화유산을 말살하고 동학농민혁명의 역사적 사실을 왜곡하려던 일제의 만행을 명백히 볼 수 있다.

지금은 고부 관아의 모습을 찾아보기 어렵게 되었지만, 운동장 한쪽에는 초석, 기단석 등 건물의 일부가 여전히 남아 있다.

  • 조선 영조 41년(1765년) 고부 관아지는 성황산에서 평탄대지로 내려온다. 읍성은 평지에 자리잡은 읍의 주위를 둘러싼 성벽의 일부가 뒤쪽으로 산 위에까지 뻗치고 있는 형태를 취하는 평산성의 입지를 선호하였는데 순수하게 평지에 축조된 형식은 조선 초기에 나타나기 시작했다. 이런 추세에 따라 고부군도 관아를 평지로 이전한 것으로 보인다.
