King Hyoso was the eldest son of King Sinmun (r. 681-692) and ascended the throne at the young age of five. His mother, Queen Consort Sinmuk, served as regent for eight years. During his reign, the government was set in order and the School of Medicine was established. Many fortresses were established near the northern border in an attempt to regain former Goguryeo territory, and a market to facilitate the easier distribution of goods was established in the capital.

This is known to be the tomb of King Hyoso (r. 692-702), the 32nd ruler of the Silla dynasty (57 BCE–935 CE).

The tomb is a stone chamber tomb. Around the base of the tomb mound are some remaining natural stones. About 100 m from the tomb is the tomb of King Seongdeok (r. 702-737), King Hyoso’s younger brother.

Memo

  • 관제를 정비하고 - what does this really mean? It is so vague.
  • near the northern border - is this a correct interpretation?
