'''Poseokjeong Pavilion Site, Gyeongju'''

These remains located on the west side, at the foot of Namsan mountain, are presumed to have been a reception venue during the Silla period (57 BCE-935 CE). This place is presumed to have been built by King Heongang (r. 875-886), but the pavilion is not here anymore and only the stone structure that creates the watercourse is left.

This is the former site of Poseokjeong Pavilion, which was a place used by the royal family of the Silla kingdom (57 BCE-935 CE) for recreation or ritual purposes. It is located at the foot of the western slope of Namsan Mountain, which was the southern boundary of the ancient Silla capital.

According to a local legend, Wang Xizhi/Wang Huiji (303-361), a government official and calligrapher of China’s Eastern Jin Dynasty*, held parties here for his friends during which they put glasses with alcohol in the winding water. While the glass flowed towards somebody, that person had to compose and recite a poem, but in case the person failed to do the task they were punished by drinking three glasses of alcohol. These remains are considered to be the place where such parties happened.

Nothing remained of this site apart from the vestiges of a winding, man-made water channel. During the Japanese colonial period (1910-1945), Japanese authorities renovated the remains of the water channel arbitrarily without consideration of archeological evidence, and so its exact original appearance is now unknown. The current water channel measures 20 cm in depth and 22 m in length.

Originally there was a stone turtle that connected the water that came down from the Namsan mountain to the winding watercourse. However during the Japanese colonial period (1910-1945) the original form '''of the watercourse''' suffered many damages, and the stone turtle disappeared, so the watercourse was repaired based on aesthetic intuition (for 임의로). The current watercourse measures 20cm in depth and 22m in length.

These kinds of winding water channels were historically used by literati for poetry writing competitions among friends. During the competition, guests would sit along a winding water channel, and a liquor glass would be placed to float on the water. Each guest would have to compose a poem before the glass reached them, or they would be forced to drink three glasses of liquor as punishment.

During the excavation survey in 1999, there were discovered artifacts such as roof tiles that had carved on them “poseok” and others that seem to have been used for ancestral rituals. According to these artifacts, there are new opinions saying that this place was connected to a shrine called Poseoksa and it was built in the late Unified Silla period (668-935) for performing ancestral rituals.
+
A place named Poseokjeong appears in historical records such as ''History of the Three Kingdoms'' (Samguk sagi) and the ''Memorabilia of the Three Kingdoms'' (Samguk yusa). It is said that King Heongang (r. 875-886) saw the guardian spirit of Namsan Mountain dance here and copied the spirit by following along, and that in 927, King Gyeongae (r. 924-927) was forced to commit suicide by an enemy during a banquet held here.

In 1999, the area nearby the water channel was excavated. At this time, roof tiles with the inscription “Poseok” were discovered, confirming that this was indeed the place mentioned in the historical records. Various rituals tools were also uncovered.

Because of the water channel and aforementioned records, this place was long been thought to be a recreation or leisure pavilion. However, other historical records along with the artifacts excavated in the vicinity suggest this place may have also functioned as shrine where rituals were performed, possibly to the spirit of the mountain.
 +

 +
Up until the Joseon period (1392-1910), there was also a stone tortoise which funneled water from the mountain into the mouth of the man-made water channel, but this stone no longer remains.
