해설문

국문

이 능은 신라 제24대 진흥왕(540~576 재위)을 모신 곳으로 알려져 있다. 진흥왕은 제23대 왕인 법흥왕이 아들 없이 세상을 뜨자 조카로서 왕위에 올라 37년간 재위하였다. 즉위 당시 나이가 7살에 불과하여 왕태후가 섭정*하였다. 진흥왕은 대가야를 병합하고 한강 유역과 함경도 일부 지역까지 영토를 넓혔다. 화랑제도를 마련하고 󰡔국사(國史)󰡕를 편찬하였으며, 불교를 장려하였다. 진흥왕이 세상을 뜨자 영경사(永敬寺)의 북쪽 봉우리에서 장사를 지냈다고 한다.

이 능은 선도산에서 남쪽으로 뻗어 내린 능선의 끝자락에 있다. 인근의 서악동 삼층석탑(보물 제65호) 소재지 일대를 ‘영경사터’로 보아 이 무덤을 ‘진흥왕릉’으로 정하였다. 능의 주변에 자연석으로 만든 둘레돌의 일부가 드러나 있다.

영문

This is known to be the tomb of King Jinheung (r. 540-576), the 24th ruler of the Silla dynasty (57 BCE–935 CE).

King Jinheung ascended to the throne after his paternal uncle King Beopheung (r. 514-540) died without a son. As he was only 7 years old at the time, his mother acted as regent until he was of age. During his reign, he greatly expanded Silla’s territory by incorporating the Daegaya chiefdom and taking Baekje kingdom territory around the Hangang River and part of today’s Hamgyeong-do Province. He established a system to select boys from good families of good morals and train them to become elite leaders called “flower youths (hwarang)." He also compiled a national history and promoted Buddhism.

The tomb mound is surrounded by natural stones at the base.
