This is the tomb of King Wonseong (?-798, r. 785-798), the 38th ruler of the Silla dynasty (57 BCE–935 CE).
King Wonseong’s birth name was Kim Gyeong-sin. He was the 12th-generation descendant of King Naemul (r. 356-402). He came to power after King Seondeok (r. 780-785) died without an heir, competing for the throne with Kim Ju-won, another member of the royal family. During his reign, he established a state civil service examination to recruit talent based on academic ability and sent envoys to the Balhae kingdom (698-926) to promote exchange.
The tomb mound is surrounded by a stone railing. Stone plates surround the base of the tomb mound. Along the base, there are stone buttresses which feature carvings of the 12 zodiac animals dressed in armor. In front of the tomb are various stone structures, collectively designated as Treasure No. 1427.
