When Yi Eon-jeok (1491-1553) retired from his official post as a civil official, he returned to his home village and stayed at his personal residence Dongnakdang House. While staying in this village, he gave names to the mountains and rocks in the area. Collectively, these were known as Sasanodae, meaning the “Four Mountains and Five Rocks.”

One of these rocks is located along Jagyecheon Stream which flows in front of Oksanseowon Confucian Academy. The water of the stream flows over this wide and flat rock, to create a small waterfall and plunge pool. The rock was named Sesimdae, meaning “Place of Rinsing the Heart,” and conveys that this is a place where one can obtain scholarship by cleansing one’s mind of distracting thoughts and befriending nature. The calligraphy inscribed on the rock was written by the renowned scholar Yi Hwang (1501-1571), who was a student of Yi Eon-jeok.
