이곳은 신라 초기 박씨 왕들의 무덤으로 시조 박혁거세왕(朴赫居世王, 기원전 57∼기원후 4 재위), 왕후 알영부인(閼英夫人, 기원전 53∼미상), 제2대 남해왕(南解王, 4∼24 재위), 제3대 유리왕(儒理王, 24∼57 재위), 제5대 파사왕(婆娑王, 80∼112 재위)의 무덤으로 알려져 있다. 삼국사기에는 네 분의 왕을 담엄사 북쪽 사릉원 내에 장사지냈다고 하였다.
시조왕은 기원전 37년 서울에 성을 쌓아 금성(金城)이라 하였고 기원전 32년에 금성에 궁실을 지었다. 남해왕은 서기 8년 탈해(脫解)가 뛰어난 인물이란 말을 듣고 불러 사위로 삼고 10년 대보(大輔)의 벼슬을 주어 나라의 일을 맡겼다. 유리왕은 32년에 6부(六部)의 이름을 고치고 이들에게 이(李)·최(崔)·손(孫)·정(鄭)·배(裵)·설(薛)의 성(姓)을 주었으며, 17관등(官等)을 마련했다고 한다. 파사왕은 가야와 백제에 대한 방어체제를 정비하면서 이웃한 소국들을 병합해 신라의 영토를 확대했다.
다섯 무덤 가운데 서쪽 무덤이 가장 큰데 직경 약 33m, 높이 약 7m이다. 이 무덤의 동측으로 최근에 조성한 상석, 표석과 진입부가 위치하며 진입부에는 일자제각(一字祭閣)이 자리하고 있다. 남쪽 무덤은 두 개의 봉분이 이어져 있다. 무덤의 외형으로 보아 가까운 대릉원 일대의 고분처럼 돌무지덧널무덤[積石木槨墳]일 가능성이 있다. 능원 내에는 박혁거세왕을 제향하는 숭덕전(崇德殿)과 그 내력을 새긴 신도비가 있다. 동쪽에는 알영부인의 탄생지로 전해지는 알영정(閼英井)이 있다.
영문
These five tombs are known to be the tombs of the founding royal family the Silla dynasty, the Park Clan. They include tombs of the founder of the Silla dynasty, King Hyeokgeose (r. 57 BCE-4 CE), and his wife, Queen Aryeong, as well as his son King Namhae (r. 4-24), his grandson King Yuri (r. 24-57), and his great-grandson King Pasa (r. 80-112), the 2nd, 3rd, and 5th kings of Silla, respectively.
In 37 BCE, Park Hyeokgeose built a capital fortress and named it Geumseong (“Golden Fortress”), and five years later built a palace there. King Namhae took Seok Talhae as his son-in-law and gave him a high position in the government. King Yuri, in 32 CE, changed the names of the Six Boards and gave them all surnames and made 17 administrative ranks. King Pasa set up a policy for defense against the neighboring Baekje kingdom and Gaya confederacy and expanded the Silla territory by incorporating the nearby chiefdoms.
Among the five tombs, the one in the west is the largest at 33 m in diameter and 7 m in height. The various stone structures, tombstone, and ritual house were recently built. In the south, two tombs are connected together and are presumed to be a 돌무지덧널무덤 tomb similar to other nearby tombs. There is a stele and ritual hall honoring King Hyeokgeose. To the east, there is a well which is believed to be where Queen Aryeong was born.
