해설문

국문

이 집은 여주이씨 집안의 서당으로 지족당 이연상(知足堂 李淵祥, 1788~1846)이 먼저 터를 정하고 후학들을 가르쳤다. 이후 문중에서 그를 추모하기 위하여 조선 고종 4년(1867)에 학당을 세워 큰 아들 경암 이재목(敬庵 李在穆, 1817~1879)이 많은 후학들을 길렀다. 또한 이곳은 일제강점기 독립운동의 주요 터전으로 활용되었다. 건국훈장 애족장을 받은 독립운동가 이석채(李錫埰, 1892~1948)는 이연상의 4대손이며 이집에서 태어나 활약하였다. 공부하는 곳이니 만큼 대문과 담장 없이 소박하고 간결하게 지었으며 앞마당에서 마을의 전경을 감상할 수 있다. 강당은 명리재(明理齋)이며 장판각(藏板閣)이라는 편액이 걸린 방은 책과 경판을 보관하던 곳이다. 동쪽에 있는 행랑채는 서당의 살림살이를 맡았던 곳이다. 여주이씨 집안은 이 서당 이외에도 규모가 좀 더 큰 양좌서당이 있었고 경산서당도 있다.
