This is the tomb of King Seongdeok (r. 702-737), the 33rd ruler of the Silla dynasty (57 BCE–935 CE).

King Seongdeok’s birth name was Kim Heung-gwa or Kim Yung-gi. He was the second son of King Sinmun (r. 681-692) and became king after his older brother, King Hyoso (r. 692-702), died without a male heir. During his reign, he created a policy for distributing land to male commoners over the age of 15, and implemented a welfare policy to help those suffering from social or national crisis. These policies helped to bring stability to Silla which led to the kingdom's golden age.

Between the butresses are statues of the 12 zodiac animals wearing armor. The monkey statue was relocated to the Gyeongju National Museum. In front of the tomb are pairs of stone lions and stone civil officials. The civil official statue on the left is missing its body from the chest down.

이곳은 신라 제33대 성덕왕(702~737 재위)의 무덤이다. 성덕왕은 신문왕의 둘째 아들로 형 효소왕의 뒤를 이어 왕위에 올랐다. 농사짓는 백성들에게 정전(丁田)*을 지급하였고, 구휼(救恤)** 정책을 적극적으로 펴서 정치를 안정시켜 신라의 전성기를 이끌었다고 평가한다. 성덕왕이 죽은 후에∨이거사(移車寺) 남쪽에서 장사를 지냈으며, 왕의 무덤은 동촌(東村) 남쪽 혹은 양장곡(楊長谷)에 있다는 기록이 있다.

이 능은 형제봉의 남서쪽 산자락에 있다. 둘레돌의 버팀돌(撑石) 바깥쪽에 삼각형 돌이 받쳐져 있다. 이 돌 사이에 갑옷을 입은 입체 십이지신상(十二支神像)이 있다. 그중 원숭이상은 국립경주박물관으로 옮겼다. 능 주위로 돌난간을 둘렀고, 능 앞에 돌사자와 관인상을 배치하였다. 이 능의 비는 성덕왕 사후 18년이 지난 경덕왕 13년(754)에 세운 것이다.
