해설문

국문

불국사의 중심이 되는 예배공간은 대웅전과 극락전이다. 청운교와 백운교는 대웅전으로 들어가는 자하문(紫霞門) 앞 계단이다. 서쪽의 연화교와 칠보교(국보 제22호)에 비해 규모가 크고 웅장하다. 위쪽 16단이 청운교, 아래쪽 18단이 백운교이다. 속세와 부처의 세계를 연결한다는 종교적인 상징성을 지닌다.

청운교에 비해 백운교 부분의 높이와 너비가 조금씩 더 커서 시각적으로 안정감과 상승감을 준다. 계단을 다리형식으로 만든 특이한 형태로 청운교와 백운교가 이어지는 부분은 무지개 모양의 홍예(虹霓)* 구조를 이루고 있다.

통일신라 경덕왕 10년(751)에 건립된 것으로 추정되며, 완전한 형태로 남아있는 통일신라의 계단으로 역사·문화적 가치가 매우 높다. 1919년에 전체적인 보수가 있었고, 1972년 동자주(童子柱)*와 난간이 복원되었다.
