해설문
국문
불국사의 중심이 되는 예배공간은 대웅전과 극락전이다. 연화교와 칠보교는 불국사 극락전(極樂殿)으로 통하는 안양문(安養門) 앞 계단이다. 아래쪽의 10단이 연화교, 위쪽 8단이 칠보교이다. 아미타 극락세계가 연화와 칠보로 장식되어 있다는 불경의 내용을 상징적으로 표현한 것이다.
대웅전 앞쪽에 있는 청운교와 백운교(국보 제23호)에 비하면 규모만 작을 뿐, 계단을 다리형식으로 만든 구조나 형식은 유사하다. 연화교의 층계에는 계단마다 넓은 연꽃잎이 새겨져 있다.
청운교와 백운교가 웅장한 멋을 보여준다면, 연화교와 칠보교는 섬세한 아름다움을 지녔다. 온전한 형태로 남아있는 통일신라의 계단으로 역사·문화적 가치가 매우 높다.
통일신라 경덕왕 10년(751)에 건립된 것으로 추정되며, 완전한 형태로 남아있는 통일신라의 계단으로 역사·문화적 가치가 매우 높다. 1919년에 전체적인 보수가 있었고, 1972년 동자주(童子柱)*와 난간이 복원되었다.

영문
Yeonhwagyo and Chilbogyo Bridges of Bulguksa Temple, Gyeongju
This stone staircase leads to the courtyard of Geungnakjeon Hall, which honors Amitabha, the Buddha of the Western Paradise. The structure dates to the foundation of the temple in the mid-8th century. It was repaired in 1919, and its railings were newly added in 1972.
The staircase consists of a lower 10 steps and an upper 8 steps that are separated by an intermediate landing. The lower section is slightly wider than the upper section, giving the staircase a sense of stability. The underside of each section is arched like a bridge, and it is said that there was once a pond at the base of the staircase. The lower section is referred to as Yeonhwayo, meaning “bridge of the lotus flower,”and features lotus design engravings, while the upper section is referred to as Chilbogyo, meaning “bridge of the seven treasures.”These are elements which are said to decorate the Western Paradise. At the top of the staircase is a gate names Anyangmun, which is also a reference to the Western Paradise.
There is another staircase to the right of this one that leads into the adjacent courtyard of Daeungjeon Hall, the temple’s main worship hall. It has the same overall design, but is larger and grander than this one.
