해설문
국문
이곳은 월성, 동궁과 월지, 계림, 첨성대, 내물왕릉 등 여러 사적지와 그 일대를 보존·관리할 목적으로 하나의 지구단위를 설정한 곳이다.
동서로는 계림(사적 제19호)에서부터 동궁과 월지(사적 제18호)까지, 남북은 월성(사적 제16호)에서 대릉원 앞 첨성로에 이르는 668,121㎡의 넓은 영역이다. 이곳은 신라 왕족 및 귀족들의 중심생활권역으로 추정되며 고대 신라의 성장은 물론, 통일 이후 신라의 정치와 사회상을 모두 포함하고 있다.
내물왕릉(사적 제188호)을 비롯한 수십 기의 신라 고분이 밀집되어 있을 뿐 아니라, 신라 궁성과 관련된 대형 건물 유적이 분포되어 있다. 이미 지정된 사적지들 사이에서도 유적들이 계속 확인되고 있다.
경주 동부 사적지대는 경주역사문화지구에 포함되어 2000년 12월 유네스코 세계문화유산으로 등록되었다.
