This complex of ancient tombs located on the flat land to the northwest of Wolseong Palace Site (Historic Site No. 16) belong to the kings, queens, and aristocracy of the Silla kingdom (57 BCE-935 CE).

The name Daereungwon means “Garden of the Great Tombs” and comes from the History of the Three Kingdoms (Samguk sagi) in which it is written that “the funeral of King Michu took place at the great tombs (daerung).”As the tomb of King Michu (Historic Site No. 175) is located among this complex of tombs, the area came to be known by this name.

Many of the most famous Silla tombs are located within this complex, including Geomchong, Geumgeanchong, Geumnyeongchong, and Seobongchong Tombs which were excavated during the Japanese colonial period (1910-1945), as well as Cheonmachong and Hwangnamdaechong Tombs which were excavated in the 1970s.

During the Japanese colonial period, 155 tombs were identified in this area. Urban development resulted in some of the tombs being lost or damaged, but recent excavations, such as those taking place at the Jjoksaem Archaeological Site, have revealed numerous more tombs which had been hidden underground.

The tombs, buried under earthen mounds known as tumuli, have been found to exhibit diverse structures, ranging from wooden chamber tombs dating to the early period of the Silla kingdom when it had not yet expanded its territory, to stone chamber tombs with corridors dating to the period after Silla unified the Korean Peninsula in 668. The most representative tombs of this complex are wooden chamber tombs with stone mounds that are presumed to date to the 4th and 5th centuries. The type, amount, and quality of excavated artifacts differs greatly from tomb to tomb.
