The ancient tombs in Geumcheok-ri are presumed to have been built by the Silla Kingdom around the 5th and 6th centuries during the Three Kingdoms period (57 BCE-668 CE). There are approximately 50 tombs in this complex. The further west, the larger the tombs in the complex are, although they are small compared to the tombs in the downtown Gyeongju which are presumed to have belonged to the royal family. It suggests that the ancient tombs in Geumcheok-ri were constructed for the local nobles who ''ruled over/held the power in'' the area.

In 1952*, a survey of two tombs in the complex was conducted after half of each was carved away due to the construction of the road between Daegu and Gyeongju. As a result, it was confirmed that these were wooden chamber tombs with stone mound typical for Silla Kingdom. The artifacts discovered on the site include golden earrings, silver belts, curved jade beads, and iron daggers/knives.

The “geumcheok” in the name of the area where the tombs are located means “golden measuring rod.” According to a legend, the founding king of Silla dynasty Bak Hyeokgeose was bestowed a golden measuring rod by the heavens upon becoming a king. It is said that he ordered 40 fake tombs to be built in the area to hide the location of the precious tool.
